English Course Leader

I am a qualified English and media teacher who grew up in Stratford Upon Avon and moved back here two years ago with my other half and our two boys.

I originally left Stratford to go to the University of Sussex to do American Studies. It was a course that combined my favourite subjects: literature, film, history and politics. It was a four-year course with one year in America so I went to the University of Washington in Seattle, which was an amazing experience.

After university I taught English in Barcelona, Prague and then moved to London. Whilst in London I taught English and media in a boys’ secondary school and was head of KS4 for most of this.

Most of my time is spent with my family; we like to be outside in parks or other places of interest.

I’ve always been a keen swimmer, belonging to clubs in the past and competing. Now I use swimming as a way to relax, empty my mind but also keep fit. More recently I’ve started doing Pilates too.

As you would expect from an English teacher, I love to read. I also like to go to the theatre and would go to see lots of plays when I lived in London. I now try to make the most of the RSC in Stratford but don’t go enough. I enjoy comedy in all forms, television programmes, live shows and podcasts.

What I like about English is that it can be enjoyed on so many levels and doesn’t just happen in the classroom or when reading a book. It can be studied using film, T.V, news, music and even our own interactions. It’s everywhere!
